Home is where my heart is

5000 miles, 13 days, 4 states, and too numerous to count stops at Subway...the Tanswell family are the winners of the Amazing Race - Christmas Edition! (Technically, Dad's race isn't quite over since he's en route back to Canada, via Seattle and Vancouver as I type.)

We arrived home yesterday afternoon. We had spent Thursday and Friday evening in Phoenix. We were lucky enough to spend Friday night with my sister, brother-in-law and niece for a late Christmas celebration at Chevy's (check out the size of my margarita glass in the pics below!) We loaded up for our final drive yesterday morning and in fact, yesterday's drive was a breeze, a mere 6 hours (instead of 10 or 11). Got my camera hooked up to my laptop so was able to download some pictures; and some of them are from my phone (the fuzzy or lower grade ones).

Last night Rich came down so my father could ask him about his intentions regarding his daughter. But we never really got to that part. Instead we enjoyed fine food and ale at Redondo Beach Brewing Co (their menu has really improved - yay!) Took Dad to the airport early this morning and have been in my pjs since returning from LAX. It's nice to be back in my routine! =) Will head to Santa Monica for a Devine New Year's I'm sure! It's good to be home!

Texas Trip...last legs

Well, 10:27pm, here I am in Phoenix. Yesterday morning I was in Pottsboro, TX. So that means two very long days of driving. We will stop here until Saturday, after which our last leg will begin in earnest as we head back to California.

I have a few pics of Christmas on my camera; the USB cord, however, was left in Redondo Beach (as was Pirates of the Caribbean II which is WAY overdue now), so I'll post those later.

But today's driving included a snow storm between Wilcox and Tucson (both AZ)...yay for Dad's expertise driving! This was taken from my phone. It was 33 degrees at the time and really coming down...

Looking forward to getting back to "normal" but tomorrow (Friday) includes a visit with the Kaufman family, hopefully lunch where Marti works and then a post-Christmas celebration with the Rankins (my sister, bro-in-law and 11 year old niece). Yay!

Texas trip so far

Settled into Mom’s place. We got here Wednesday afternoon and since then have been shopping (I won’t admit how many trips to Wal-Mart), lunching and hanging out with my Aunt Sonora and Uncle Jim in the evenings – which is always a lot of fun.

This is the view from my room – mom’s place is on a pond and my room (and the other guest room) is on the 3rd floor.

Here’s Mom working on our tree – we like the big balls! =)

And I took Abby for a little excursion this morning around the pond (mom’s townhome is in the background on the left side). It was COLD and it was FUN. I was able to let her off the leash because it’s so rural.

Tomorrow (Saturday), Dad arrives from Canada. Then we’ll do a few local Christmas traditions (lights – stuff like that). Christmas dinner will be here at Mom’s, with Aunt Sonora and Uncle Jim, Uncle Paul, Dad, Mom and me (totaling 6). We volunteered my father to cook for us all – as he’s so good at that! We may not do the traditional meal, we have yet to decide.

That’s all for now!

Road Trip!!!!

Off we go tomorrow driving to Texas for Christmas. Yes, I said "driving". How else would we be able to lug the dogs and all of their gear? We have audio books, Christmas music and a LOT of DMB loaded onto the iPod! Hopefully we'll pull into Mom's condo in Pottsboro mid-day on Wednesday. According to their website, here is the forecast for Wednesday:

WEDNESDAY - Showers and thunderstorms likely. Highs in the lower 60s. Chance of precipitation 70 percent.
WEDNESDAY NIGHT - Mostly cloudy with a chance of showers and thunderstorms in the evening - then partly cloudy with a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms after midnight. Lows around 40. Chance of precipitation 30 percent.

Dad flies in on Saturday (not to Pottsboro, I don't think they have any international hubs there...) so we'll pick him up at DFW. Then next week, we'll head back but with a 3rd person (him) and all of our gear (and by "gear" I mean awesome presents). The trip back will include an overnight stop in Phoenix so we can do another little Christmas with the Rankins. Yay!

Last time I was at mom's I easily picked up a wireless signal so I'm taking my laptop with me and hoping the neighbor hasn't made it a secure connection yet. That way I can update all of my BLOG fans of the excitement that is Pottsboro, TX.

Until then - Happy Holidays!

PS Here is some other excellent information I noticed on the Pottsboro site:

Races in Pottsboro:
White Non-Hispanic (95.4%)
American Indian (2.2%)
Hispanic (2.0%)
Two or more races (1.2%)
Other race (0.7%)
Ancestries: Irish (13.6%), United States (13.0%), German (11.8%), English (9.2%), Italian (3.2%), Scottish (2.3%).

Barenaked Weekend

This BLOG entry is dedicated to Rich, who seemed very interested in when my weekend update might be posted – which leads me to believe he actually does like it when I post about him and post pics, too!

So this past weekend was the trip to Phoenix. The main reason for going was to go to a Barenaked Ladies concert with my sister and brother in law. In the end, we made a trip out of it complete with introducing Rich to friends and family and having a little getaway.

First stop, after we checked into our nice hotel, was dinner with Marti and her boyfriend, Tracy. Strangely I have no pictures of that – we were just busy chatting away I guess! Chowing down at Oreganos, the four of us discussed how we first met each other (them: traffic school, us: e-Harmony) and more dog stories than we could count (including the sharing of pictures and everything!) Afterwards, Rich and I went to the Biltmore Fashion Square for a brief walk around to see Christmas decorations. Finishing off the night at the sports bar at the hotel, we had had an easy drive into town, pleasing hotel room, great dinner and conversation and then a 60 second walk to our room.

Saturday morning I met up with August for bagel and coffee at one of my old haunts (Einstein’s and Starbucks, of course) which was fantastic. Catching up on dogs (yes, a reoccurring topic apparently with me), career, love, family and much more, we as usual just picked up where we left off!

Then it was off to the Kaufman’s for what turned out to be a really fun visit complete with Eric, Tobie, Paige, Cole. Moxie and Homer! Seeing Paige and Cole for the very first time in person was really moving. Like so many, I’ve spent the last 11 months reading each and every BLOG entry and felt like I knew them. But to see them and cuddle, play and marvel at them and their incredible parents in person was fantastic! After disinfecting ourselves (think the radiation exposure shower scene from Silkwood), Rich and I were allowed, in fact, encouraged to play with the kids which we did! We even had an outing – we went out for lunch! There Rich and Eric talked “shop” and Tobie and I talked about everything else! I was sorry to hear that they feel they need to give up Homer and Moxie but of course it’s understandable, especially with the baby whose name is not yet released (but I know it! I know it!) on his way.

Saturday night, Rich and I met up with my sister, Shannon and her husband, Devin for dinner and the concert. They took us to The Compass Room atop the Hyatt Regency downtown for a posh and relaxing dinner (thanks, guys!) after which we walked the 5 blocks to the concert. I’d never seen BNL before and this small venue was a great place to see them for the first time as it was quite intimate. They were, as promised, very entertaining, and I even caught Rich singing along to their encore (you didn’t think I noticed, did you, Rich?)! Then we stopped by El Chorro Lodge for a drink by their outside fire pits. Interesting characters were there - I guess that's what happens when you first get to a place at midnight.

Sunday morning we couldn’t wait to see the Kaufman babies again (Paige, Cole and Eric) and Tobie so we took bagels and coffee to their place. That’s where I finally whipped out the camera and thanks to Eric’s experience in taking pics of the kiddies, we were able to get a few fun shots.

A moment of gratitude for Howard Stern’s show on Sirius. Listening to the replays of that on the way back to California was great. I was so bummed out to be leaving the fun and facing the week ahead (school night syndrome, you know?) that we were able to have quite a few laughs throughout the 6 hour drive.

And for a few TV comments:
  • If you are a Survivor fan, check out the BLOG on Survivor.com where past survivors post after each episode. Some of them are hilarious!
  • If you are an Amazing Race fan, I, too, miss the Beauty Queens and can’t believe Rob & Kimberly made it first. “Damnit!” Another funny update on this show can be found each week on EW.
  • If you are a Heroes fan, then you’re awesome. Loving that show!
  • If you are a House Hunters fan on HGTV, why don’t we ever meet a couple who look at a space and say, “This is great for entertaining. But we don’t entertain.” I can’t believe there aren’t more couch potatoes on that show. I end up feeling bad about my life, because every person on there needs a space to entertain in. And I would just want room for a big TV!
  • If you are an America’s Next Top Model fan, I understand why you are embarrassed to admit it, since I am too. But it’s so goooood!
